Assynt in Monochrome

This is what is known as a "grab shot" - unplanned and unanticipated. The previous night the temperature had dropped to -23 degrees - the lowest ever recorded here. When this shot was taken it had climbed to -16! At this temperature my exposure meter had frozen and I had to guess the settings and the film development.
I wanted to wait for the slowly moving figure in the right of the frame to pass, but it was so cold my hands were sticking to the camera and I couldn't wait, so I just pressed the shutter and put my gloves back on, puting it down as another "nearly" shot. In the end, rather than detracting fom the shot, he made it complete.

The old gentleman died a few years later. He was what we call a "local character"! It has been my best selling picture and hangs on walls around the world.
