18th Century gold chalice and paten
backforwardDiscovered after having been locked in a vault for over 50 years in St. Moluag's, a 12th Century church in Eoropaidh in the Isle of Lewis. The chalice was made in Montpellier in the late 18th century, the paten in Rome in 1840 by Angelo Giannoti. The engravings were made in the early 20th century. The inscriptions in Latin had been made in tribute to Henry Thomas Nisbet Hamilton Ogilvy by his wife who was the grand-daughter of the Earl of Elgin (Marbles). Exactly why the artifacts were locked away is unknown.
