Assynt in Colour
The landscape here is amongst the most photogenic in Europe. Suilven, Quinag, Stac Pollaidh, Canisp and a dozen other uniquely sculpted mountains are amongst the oldest on Earth - the area is a magnet for geologists. The flora and fauna is as varied and abundant as anywhere in the British Isles. The pristine sandy beaches of Achnahaird, Sandwood, Stoer, Clachtoll and Achmelvich are unrivalled on these shores. The Kirkaig and Inver rivers have more beauty and interest in their handful of miles than others have in hundreds. Ardvreck Castle, Calda House and countless ruined croft houses, mills and sheilings are constant reminders of some of the most significant periods in Scotland's history.
Photographers from all over the world travel to the Scottish Highlands. I have met many over the years and talking to them has always reminded me of how fortunate I am. The climate here is not the most accommodating. Many photographers, some of the very highest calibre and repute, go home from long awaited and meticulously planned excursions without having released a shutter. I have the luxury of waiting for those brief moments when the elements oblige. My location has been a continual and endless source of inspiration. It has been through an endless quest to record its beauty that my craft has developed.
This gallery displays some of my attempts to share the beauty of this place with those unfortunate enough not to have visited it.
It shows a tiny sample of the largest body of my work. I feel awkward taking credit for the pictures. The Highland landscape is ever present and always changing - I simply wait for the right moment and point a camera at it.
