Flora

The flora of the Highlands is surprisingly rich. The fertile sandy soil of the machair lands support hundreds of species of flower of every shape, size and colour. The acidic peatbogs support bogbean, sundews, butterworts and orchids. The rocky lunar landscape of Highland mountaintops may not strike one as being conducive to any form of life, but are home to mosses and lichens while rowan and holly will take root in the thinnest of cracks. The hillsides are perfumed with heather, bog mirtle and honeysuckle. Recently planted broadleaved woodlands and the remnants of the ancient Caledonian forest sustain an enormous array of species. I am a photographer, not a botanist, but could photograph a different species every day. My knowledge of botany extends no further than being able to identify one or two well known plants and flowers. As a result, some of these pictures may well be incorrectly titled. Those who know better are more than welcome to correct me here
